Art for the Sake of Consciousness-Life

by David Johnston (1997 PhD Clinical)

This Exhibit is based on artworks that I have done over many years, The art is a reflection of the individuation process as articulated by C. G. Jung. Individuation involves self-definition and becoming one’s unique self, ultimately organized around the centre of personality, the Self, our life’s goal. From the beginning art was not divorced from spiritual or religious life and ritual. The earliest known art forms were beautiful ritual depictions found in caves throughout the world dating back some 40,000-50,000 years. Art can play an important role in unfolding individuation, similar to ancient theurgic rituals of transformation.
