Fair Housing and the Ferguson Conjuncture

The talk will argue that understanding the ninety seconds of interaction between Michael Brown and Officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson on August 9, 2014 requires understanding a ninety year history that set the stage for the power imbalances and affective charges of the encounter.
George Lipsitz studies social movements, urban culture, and inequality, and is chair of the advisory board of the Center for Black Studies Research at University of California, Santa Barbara. His books include Midnight at the Barrelhouse; Footsteps in the Dark; The Possessive Investment in Whiteness, A Life in the Struggle and Time Passages. Dr. Lipsitz serves as chairman of the board of directors of the African American Policy Forum and is a member of the board of directors of the National Fair Housing Alliance, and senior editor of the interdisciplinary ethnic studies journal KALFOU. He received his Ph.D in history at the University of Wisconsin.
