What Is It You Plan to Do With Your One Wild and Precious Life?
What Depth Psychology and Mythology Can Teach Us About Vocation and Why It Matters?
Jennifer Selig, PhD
This workshop explores various ways depth psychology and mythology can help us answer the poet Mary Oliver’s key question about vocation—“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” We’ll look at early childhood for clues to our vocation, and the role of our parents in shaping our views about meaningful work in the world. We’ll explore the imaginative idea by archetypal psychologist James Hillman in his book The Soul’s Code: In Search of Character and Calling, that we are born coded with a calling and given the specific character to live out that calling. We’ll look for vocational clues in our “wyrd,” the ways we are utterly unique beings with our own gifts and talents. Participants will leave the workshop with a list of journal questions for deeper exploration, and suggested readings.
