As Tropical Storm Harvey lashes Texas, officials estimate that as many as 30,000 people may end up in shelters after fleeing their homes.
Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas has called it “one of the largest disasters America has ever faced.”
The New York Times has compiled a list of resources for those who are either displaced from their homes or sheltering in place during the catastrophic flooding. (If you’re looking for somewhere to donate, please see our guide to ways to help.)

Find help and a place to stay
DisasterAssistance.gov includes a link to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s step-by-step guide to filing a flood claim, a map to locate the nearest FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers and instructions on how to apply for assistance. If you have questions about the help FEMA offers or the application process, call 1-800-621-FEMA (1-800-621-3362) or submit your query online.
KHOU, the CBS affiliate in Houston, has posted a list of critical numbers to have on hand. The station has listed several other resources as well, including where to find a shelter, information on the latest evacuation orders and the latest high-water locations in the Houston area.

Those seeking help from the Red Cross should visit one of their shelters, which are listed here.
Texas State Park camping is free for evacuees, however, be mindful that several parks have closed because of Harvey, and it’s important to call to check availability.
Survey the damage
The National Storm Damage Center has advice on how to get maximum value for your insurance claim. Note any signs of damage that can be seen from the ground, and take pictures of that damage. It’s also important to hire a reputable contractor, and avoid those “who have a financial incentive to save the insurance company money at your expense.”
Crisis Cleanup, a website that helps relief organizations coordinate efforts, advises contacting relief agencies directly for help cleaning up your home or property. If you live in Texas or Louisiana, however, you may call the Crisis Cleanup hotline anytime before Sept. 15 at 1-800-451-1954 to get a case number and be placed on a list distributed to civic and community leaders, as well as volunteer relief agencies. “We can’t guarantee you’ll be helped, but you won’t be forgotten,” their website says.
Locate the missing
If you want to report a missing child or are searching for one, you should call the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s National Emergency Child Locator Center at 1-866-908-9570 or 1-877-908-9570.
To register yourself as safe and to search for loved ones, visit the “Safe and Well” section of the Red Cross website.
In San Antonio, the city’s Animal Care Services Department is transporting and sheltering evacuated pets. Check its Facebook pagefor updates. Lost Dogs of Texas offers ways to locate lost or found animals, which can also be listed on Helping Lost Pets.
Stay safe
The Houston Chronicle has created a map of flooded streets to avoid.
The National Fire Protection Association has tips on how to safely use portable generators. Never use them inside, for example, and never refuel a generator while it is running.
If you see an animal in danger, call the Animal Rescue Disaster Hotline at 713-861-3010, which is being manned by the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
