Memorial for Marshall Chrostowski
October 4th
Marshall Chrostowski, beloved Pacifica ‘Elder, steward of the land, animals and community,’ was a remarkable man, who tended soul in and of the world.
– Stephen Aizenstat
Marshall Chrostowski was the founder of the Organic Market Gardens and the land manager for both campuses. He held advanced degrees in soil science, plant and tropical ecology, and ethnobotany. He came to Pacifica in 1989 to renovate the long abandoned grounds and orchards.
In 1990 Marshall called on Pacifica and the greater South Coast community to plant the first major grain, garlic and fava bean grow-out in the field now occupied by South Hall. By 1993, several acres had been set aside for a demonstration urban mini-farm, expanding over the next 5 years into a local food source for Pacifica’s community and the greater Santa Barbara area. Seed conservation continued to be featured, accompanied by special grow-outs and workshops on seed saving and organic gardening.
Our beloved, Marshall Chrostowski, 86, died peacefully at his home in Quebec on May 10, 2023. He is survived by his wife Micheline Lanctot, his daughters Kristen McClintock and her husband Brian, Linda Needly and her husband Lance, his son Brian Chrostowski, his grandchildren Mike McClintock and Kate McClintock and his great-grandson Leo. Marshall was born in Claremont, New Hampshire. He lived in Santa Barbara for over 40 years, bringing beauty to many landscapes, most notably as the curator of his beloved Pacifica Graduate Institute. He touched countless lives with his wisdom, empathy, kindness, unconditional love, generosity, loyalty, perseverance, stewardship, and humor. He will be sorely missed.
Recently, Pacifica Graduate Institute Alumni Association (PGIAA) voted to posthumously award Marshall its Honorary Alumni Award. This award is the highest honor bestowed upon loyal friends of Pacifica Graduate Institute who are not alumni. It recognizes individuals who have made meaningful contributions and shown dedication to the Institute through their efforts.
