ANNOUNCING THE 2021 AWARD CYCLE OF THE WALTER ODAJNYK SCHOLARSHIP
We are pleased to announce the 2021 award cycle of the Walter Odajnyk Scholarship for students in Mythological Studies at Pacifica Graduate Institute. The fund was started by students to honor Dr. Odajnyk––Walter––for his depth, his intelligence and his presence as beloved teacher from 2002 until his death in 2013.
If there were ever a time when a mythological view could help make sense of the world––and of course it always is such a time––but certainly, this is such a time. To highlight the relevance of myth in the world today, the Odajnyk Scholarship is awarded annually for an essay expressing how a mythological understanding could shed light on or help resolve a current domestic or international situation.
“The depth psychologist is generally concerned with how the fantasies or wishes of the unconscious affect the personality and behavior of a single human being. The mythologist, by contrast, is interested in how the fantasies appear in the wider community and affect that community’s perception of itself and its surrounding world.” V. Walter Odajnyk. (“Mandala of Naropa Dakini”)
Walter envisioned a future in which the evening news team would include a mythologist providing commentary on the day’s events. Written as a letter to a specific public official, such the President, or as a press release for a media outlet, essays will be judged on the quality of writing and the insightful application of mythology to a current event (500 words or less).
Two essays will be awarded in the amount of $1500 each. Winners will be announced on September 30, 2021, which is sponsored by the Alumni Association. The winning essays will be published on the PGIAA site. All full-time and dissertation phase students in the Myth program are encouraged to apply. For application materials, click links below.
