DescriptionThe position is available in Santa Barbara.  Bilingual ability in English and Spanish is required.

Under general direction this professional level position supports the court process by mediating and investigating custody and visitation disputes; preparing custody, visitation and evaluation reports; and performs related work as required.

Examples of Duties

  1. Receives, researches, analyzes, and facilitates resolution of mediation and evaluation referrals from Superior Court judges regarding civil custody of minors and visitation rights.
  2. Mediates with parents to arrive at mutually acceptable resolutions in the best interest of the children; presents written reports to the court and attorneys for the parties regarding agreements reached as a result of mediation.
  3. Conducts Family Code Section 3111 Evaluations for the courts; interviews parents, children, relatives, health professionals, school officials and others to assess and evaluate needs and best interests of children involved in custody or visitation disputes; makes recommendations regarding custody and visitation of children in a report to the court, and testifies in court as needed.
  4. Performs administrative tasks including maintenance of custody reports and statistical data; makes presentations to bar associations, community organizations, and other groups regarding the mediation program.
  5. Teaches educational classes and training dealing with issues of divorce, separation, and child custody.
  6. Other duties as assigned.

Employment Standards

Any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities.  Typical ways to obtain the knowledge and abilities required would be:
  1. Possession of a Master’s degree in psychology, social work, marriage, family and child counseling, or other behavioral science substantially related to marriage and family interpersonal relationships, and at least two years experience in counseling or psychotherapy, preferably in family, marital and child counseling; OR
  2. Any combination of training, education, and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities required under Rule 5.225 of the California Rules of Court.

Possession of a valid California license in Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy or Clinical Psychology is desired but not required.

Some positions may require the ability to travel independently as needed.

Knowledge of:
  • Effective counseling and interviewing techniques
  • Adult and child development, child abuse, clinical issues relating to children and the effects of divorce, domestic violence, and substance abuse on children, adults and families
  • Child custody research sufficient to enable assessment of the mental health needs of children
  • Psychology of families, adult and child psychopathology
  • Community resources to which clients can be referred for assistance
Ability to:
  • Participate in advanced and/or continuing education as required by California Family Code
  • Learn about the court system of California and the procedures and statutes relating to family law matters
  • Utilize effective mediation, evaluation and interviewing techniques under stressful circumstances
  • Organize, articulate and prepare objective, concise verbal and written reports
  • Testify in court
  • Utilize Court computers and associated software in the course of business
  • Effectively maintain cases, records and statistics
  • Work with the public, coworkers and others from various backgrounds and opinions  in a courteous and productive manner
Physical Requirements:
  • Standard office environment; sufficient strength, dexterity, coordination to use a keyboard and monitor on a daily basis.
  • Requires the ability to communicate clearly with the public and court staff in person and over the telephone, in court and/or in small groups.
  • Requires grasping and manipulating of files and single pieces of paper.
  • Occasional lifting up to 10 lbs. of documents, files or binders.
  • Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Some reaching for items above and below shoulder height.
